Glenmuir: Glenmuir, Knitting the European Ryder Cup Team Together since 1987

With The 2014 Ryder Cup being held at Gleneagles, Scotland, the Home of Golf, this year will be extra special for Glenmuir. The renowned Scottish golf clothing brand has designed and supplied the shirts and knitwear for 13 successive European Ryder Cup Teams since Europe’s famous first victory on American soil in 1987 at Muirfield Village.

Since Glenmuir’s beginnings in 1891, the Lanark-based company has been committed to creating golfwear with impeccable care, passion, skill and dedication to the craft. Glenmuir’s design department has hand-picked and designed Europe’s teamwear in conjunction with Captains Tony Jacklin, Bernard Gallacher, Seve Ballesteros, Sam Torrance, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal and now Paul McGinley.

Glenmuir’s Design and Buying Director, Ann Miller, who has been working on the European Team’s outfits since February 2013, said: “We are working to produce garments that not only look good but also perform in the intensity of one of the world’s greatest sporting competitions. First, we have to consider the technological specifications as when the event is in Scotland, there are different requirements than when it’s in the US. Ultimately, the fabrics are more performance-based with the shirts having superior characteristics, which will make them quick drying, breathable and highly moisture wicking. Our knitwear has natural characteristics that makes them breathable, lightweight and warm to ensure the players are kept insulated in the cool Scottish climate.

“We’re keeping this year’s designs very much under wraps until the European Team step out on the first tee at Gleneagles.”

Glenmuir’s Managing Director, Mikhel Ruia, added: “Being involved in The Ryder Cup really motivates our team at our headquarters in Lanark, Scotland. Many of our staff will be attending in September, given that it’s so close to home. A lot of planning, precision and passion go into creating the team shirts and the knitwear. It really is a team effort right through our organisation from design, buying, production, embroidery and delivery. We are all excited to see the Team in our shirts and knitwear on the first tee at Gleneagles whilst we’re all rooting for the European Team.

“All of the team suppliers, whether they’re Scottish, from continental Europe or America, come together in collaboration to support The Ryder Cup, it’s a testament to the very nature of the Ryder Cup matches. Having been part of this truly global sporting spectacle for over 25 years is a great honour for Glenmuir. But given that The Ryder Cup is in Scotland this year, it’s just that bit more special for us.”

Nike: Nike Athletes Russell Henley, Ross Fisher Notch First Victories of 2014

Ross Fisher wins the European Tours Tshwane Open
It was a Swoosh-dominant weekend with Nike athletes securing victories and a runner-up finish on both the PGA and European Tours.
Russell Henley secures Honda Classic win

Nike athletes Russell Henley and Ross Fisher each secured their first wins this season at the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour and Tshwane Open on the European Tour, respectively. Nike athlete Rory McIlory, who found himself in a sudden-death playoff with Henley, finished tied for second.

Henley birdied the 18th hole in a four-man playoff to capture the second PGA Tour trophy of his career.

“I was nervous, coming down the stretch,” he said. “I enjoy the rush, that’s why you play. It’s going to take awhile for this to sink in.”

Henley played the Nike RZN Black ball featuring innovative Speedlock RZN technology, designed to deliver more distance, better feel and a more consistent, stable ball flight into the wind. He used his Nike Method 006 putter to clinch the tournament with a two-putt for the win.

Henley wore apparel from Nike’s Tour Performance line and the Nike Lunar Control shoe.

Fellow Nike athlete McIlroy played with the Nike Covert 2.0 Tour driver and Nike RNZ Black ball – a combination that he has described as “the best driver and ball combination I’ve ever had.”

Fisher, playing with the Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Tour driver and RZN Black ball, claimed his first European Tour victory in four years – and the fifth of his career -- with a three-shot victory at the Tshwane Open in South Africa. Fisher battled the wet conditions in the Nike Dri-FIT Performance Half-zip cover-up and apparel from the Tiger Woods collection and Nike Tour Performance line.
